במכתב מאת העיתונאי ופעיל זכויות אדם אוסטרו-הונגרי קרל מריה קרטבני משנת 1868:

"אני, לעומת זאת, העברתי את השנה הזו בלימוד עקרונות היסוד המשפטיים והחקיקתיים, וזאת די בניגוד לרצוני, משום שכנגד רצוני הגעתי עד הנה ונאלצתי להתעסק גם בעקרונות היסוד האלה. התעמקתי בכל ספרי החוקים הקיימים, דנתי בסוגייה באריכות עם אישי שלטון ומשפט בולטים, מיציתי עד היסוד את הסוגייה מן ההיבט של מדעי הטבע, של האנתרופולוגיה ושל ההיסטוריה, והעליתי אותה על הכתב בכתב-יד עב כרס שאתה טרם מכיר, המחולק לארבעה ראשי פרקים עיקריים: מונוסקסואל, הומוסקסואל, הטרוסקסואל והטרוגניט. בתוך כך היה לי היתרון הגדול שעמד כאן לצדי אחד האנשים בעלי ההשכלה המדעית הגדולה ביותר, שצמח באסכולת הדיאגנוזה הווינאית אך נולד כאן ומנהל כאן את הפרקטיקה שלו, שיש לו את העניין הרב ביותר במחקרים כגון אלה, שאיתו יכולתי לדון בכול ושאיפשר לי להתבונן בחלק מהמקרים המעניינים ביותר, ואת האחרים ניתח לי בצורה תאורטית."
